Keels are made from either Steel, Iron, Lead or occasionally a combination of a Steel fin with Lead ballast. For protection a two pack or single pack priming system is available.

When choosing a two pack or single pack system the most important factors to consider are the environment that the coating is to be carried out in and the preparation methods. Two pack products are more suitable when workshop conditions are available as this enables high quality preparation in a stable environment.

Some glassfibre boats have a keel which has been encapsulated with glassfibre and these can be treated in the same manner as the rest of the underwater area.

Lead keel

Abrade with 40-60 grade abrasive paper.
Remove dust with a soft brush.
Follow chosen specification below.

Iron & Steel keels

Shot blast or abrade to bright metal.
Remove dust and grit by brushing, vacuuming or using dry compressed air.

Repainting your Keel
It is recommended that new antifouling is applied annually to ensure adequate protection.

Assuming the existing coating is sound and that you are overcoating with the same antifouling:

Wash surface with freshwater and remove any loose paint
Allow to dry before applying 2 coats of antifouling.

If there are any damaged areas:

Abrade to bright metal
Spot prime damaged area
Apply antifouling following appropriate specification above.
